How do you know if you've slipped into a care-taking obsession, or if you are just locked into a temporary situation that severely limits your free time and your ability to do care-giving things for yourself?... The caregiver can begin to identify as a helpless victim of an unfair world. This condition can lead to depression and physical illness. Physical symptoms can include many of those associated with stress, such as increase blood pressure, chest pains, palpitations and difficulty breathing. It may also surface as headaches, backaches or neck aches.

How do you know if you are experiencing caregiver burnout? Dr. Pat Joder suggests you examine whether you are experiencing any of the following beliefs or behaviors:
anger toward the subject of your care; anger toward others for not giving you more help; obsessive thinking about your task; a tendency to withdraw from social contact; lack of interest in work or ordinary activities; feelings of helplessness; fatigue;

It is EXTREMELY important to switch gears and find some time to take care of yourself. Remember, if you become ill, you won’t be able to fulfill your care-giving duties.
To help to take care of yourself:
doing some form of exercise to reduce stress, whether it's a full-scale workout at the gym, a 15-minute wall, or 10 minutes of stretching each morning. This could also include taking time to be quiet, meditate, listen to music- whatever helps you relax;
ask yourself whether you are doing more than is truly necessary;
look for help whenever possible;
stay involved in other aspects of you life that bring you joy, such as going to movies or to dinner with friends, church, sports, hobbies...
monitor your stress level, and if you feel it getting our of control, get help before you get sick;
appreciate and commend yourself on the great job you are doing taking care of another human being and realize that , in most cases, the job will en one day.
